Giving Back: Larry Graham and Conservation

Larry Graham Trust Fund and Conservation
Larry Graham was a major contributor and leader of the Club, an innovative northwest fly tier, and Yakima River Guide. Following Larry's death in 2002, his family, friends, and the OFFC sponsored the Larry Graham Conservation Fund with a priority, but not exclusive, focus on his favorite, renowned river, the Yakima.  The OFFC manages the Larry Graham Conservation Fund and actively looks for opportunities to provide financial support to conservation projects that meet the objectives of the fund.

How to Tie Larry's Very Own "Lightning Bug" Fly

Larry was also an expert fly tier and contributed a very successful trout fly pattern, the "lightning bug" which has become increasingly recognized over the past few years.

Step 1: Remove the barb from the hook, place bead on hook and place hook in vice. Now wrap lead wire 4 to 5 turns on hook behind bead, now push lead into bead, flush. Note -- the lead wire will center teh bead on the hook and help hold it in place as well as adding weight. Start thread behind bead, now take 6 to 10 pheasant tail fibers and tie in short. Now take some small copper wire and tie it in. Wind thread to bend of hook and back to front.

Step 5: Tie in the legs, hen saddle or hen back feather. Note: To prepare hen back feather legs, take a feather and pull or stroke fiber back to expose the tip of the feather. Remove the tip and pull the out the fibers you desire for legs.Tie the feather in with two loose turns and bring the wing case forward between the V of the legs.
